TPSD's 2010-2011 Anti-Bullying Plan

August 23, 2010

In response to community concerns, the Tupelo Public School District is publishing its Anti-Bullying Plan for 2010-2011. All faculty and staff will participate in additional training in maintaining safe schools.

The plan includes: professional development for safe and healthy schools, alignment of counseling curriculum, character education, and positive behavior supports.

Beginning this school year, every school will have in place a system of anonymously reporting bullying behavior that will include an electronic drop box, phone hotline, and physical boxes located at each school.

An episode of bullying has three identifying characteristics:
· A power difference between the individual being bullied and the bully
· A negative intent on the part of the bully to hurt, embarrass, or humiliate the other
· Repeated behavior - with others, with the same person, and/or with the same person over time

Based on the initial test data, TPSD officials believe that overall scores remained about the same in comparison to the 2008-2009 school year. While it is clear that some schools have improved, there is also a strong possibility that some schools will drop in rating.

TPSD Provides a Suggestion to Parents for Home Internet Filtering

August 18, 2010

The Tupelo Public School District is providing a suggestion to parents who wish to use internet filters at home with the student-issued MacBooks.

While only district-approved software can be downloaded and installed on student MacBooks, TPSD's technology department suggests that parents use a free service such as OpenDNS Basic to filter a home network. In fact, many school districts in Mississippi use OpenDNS as their internet filter.
